Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints ended a disappointing season by setting records both good and bad in a 44-38 defeat against the Carolina Panthers.

Brees passed for another 396 yards to take his seasonal tally up to 5,177 - and that makes him the first player to go beyond the 5,000-mark on three separate occasions and also in back-to-back seasons.

The Saints triggerman also became the first man to throw for 40 touchdowns in consecutive seasons after another four against the Panthers took him to 43 for the year.

New Orleans have endured a torrid time this year though with the infamous bounty scandal, and it was perhaps apt they ended it with a loss - and one that brought them some more unwanted records.

The defence conceded another 530 yards as they finished on a record-setting 7,042 for the season to end with a 7-9 record.

DeAngelo Williams enjoyed his day against the Saints defence as the Panthers running back amassed 210 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

A 65-yard run also resulted in Mike Tolbert bounding over from one yard - something he would repeat twice more as he collected a hat-trick of short-yardage scores.

Marques Colston caught two TD passes for the Saints, with Darren Sproles adding a 33-yard and tight end Jimmy Graham hauling in a 19-yard pass.

Graham has been a bright spark for the Saints this year but he fell just short of reaching 1,00 receiving yards.
