The New Orleans Saints have announced that they have agreed in principle to a multi-year contract extension with head coach Sean Payton.

Payton has not been able to coach the Saints season after being handed a one-year suspension by the NFL as part of the punishments handed out following 'bountygate'.

"I am pleased that Sean Payton will be our head coach for a long time," Saints owner Tom Benson said in confirming the deal on the team's official website.

"Now we can focus our attention on building on the winning tradition with the Saints that Sean has played such a large role in."

In his six years with the Saints, Payton has a 62-34 record in charge of the team and steered them to Super Bowl glory in 2009, when they upset the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Miami.

His current deal was due to expire at the end of the campaign, but he is now believed to have agreed to extend his stay with the franchise for a further five years.

New Orleans are 7-8 under the guidance of interim coaches Joe Vitt and Aaron Kromer this year with one more game left to play in the regular season.
