The Patriots pile in on the Jaguars
The New England Patriots overcame a slow start to beat the woeful Jacksonville Jaguars 23-16 in Florida and avoid a big upset as they prepare for the play-offs.
With perhaps the effects of last week's big loss against San Francisco still lingering, Tom Brady threw two interceptions in the first quarter as the Jags took a 10-0 lead.
Chad Henne hit Justin Blackmon from three yards and Josh Scobee kicked a 41-yard field goal as the lowly Jags eyed a big upset and just their third win of the season.
Brady recovered though as the Jaguars started to fade, with Henne throwing three interceptions while Brady found the end zone twice with passes to Danny Woodhead and Wes Welker.
The reason for Jacksonville's record showed up as they failed to punch in a score from a third and goal at the one-yard line, being moved back by a false start penalty and then a sack on Henne - followed by an interception.
Still, Jacksonville had a final chance when New England failed to kill the game off, and with just a touchdown in it Henne fired a jump ball into the end zone only for the Pats to come down with it.
The Patriots kept up their record of having never lost to the Jaguars, who slip to 2-13 for the season with their worst number of defeats in franchise history.
Bill Belichick will be looking for more from his 11-4 Pats though as the play-off approach with bigger tasks than the Jaguars ahead.
