The Indianapolis Colts clinched a play-off berth in the AFC with a 20-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

It was a double celebration from the franchise, who had finished with an NFL-worst 2-14 record last season, as Andrew Luck broke the single-season rookie record for passing yards.

The quarterback surpassed Cam Newton's year-old mark of 4,051 yards during the second quarter before rallying his team to victory at the death.

Luck marched his offense down the field to the Chiefs' seven-yard line and then completed the drive with a touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne, putting Indianapolis ahead with just over four minutes to play.

They had been 13-3 in front at half time, Darius Butler returning an interception 32 yards to the end zone to break the deadlock before Adam Vinatieri kicked a pair of field goals in the second quarter.

However, the Chiefs fought back to level the scores with 10 third-quarter points. Jamaal Charles provided another highlight in an otherwise disappointing season for the franchise, rushing 86 yards to the end zone.

Kansas City - who had mustered just two wins all year - then made it 13 apiece when Ryan Succop slotted over a field goal from 47 yards out.

Yet Luck - taken with the first pick of the draft - once again came up trumps with the game in the balance. For the seventh time in the campaign he marched the Colts downfield for a game-winning score. They are now 10-5 ahead of hosting AFC South champions Houston Texans next week.
