Tragedy has struck the Kansas City Chiefs on the eve of their clash with Carolina after linebacker Jovan Belcher took his own life.

Local police suspect that the 25-year-old murdered his girlfriend before heading to the Chiefs' practice ground, where he met with head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.

According to witnesses, Belcher thanked Crennel and Pioli for all they had done for him in his career before committing suicide in front of them.

A police statement read: "We got a call to a residence in regards to a shooting. We arrived and the lady there informed us her daughter had been shot by her on-again, off-again boyfriend. The young woman was taken to hospital, where she died a short time later.

"We then received a call to the Arrowhead practice facility in regards to a black male armed with a gun in the parking lot.

"Officers arrived, saw a black man with a gun to his head, and some Chiefs employees. As the officer got out of his car, he heard a gunshot. It appeared the individual shot himself. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead."

Despite the tragedy, the Chiefs have confirmed that Sunday's game against the Panthers at Arrowhead Stadium will go ahead as scheduled following discussions with Crennel, Pioli and NFL officials.

Belcher, 25, signed for the Chiefs in 2009 as an undrafted free agent, and he made three starts in his debut season.

He became a regular starter at linebacker last season as he established himself as one of the most consistent tacklers on the Kansas defence.

Belcher started 10 of 11 games this season as the Chiefs slumped to 1-10 - the worst record in the NFL.

Meanwhile, an assistant groundskeeper for the Cleveland Browns has killed himself at the team's practice ground.

The NFL side have confirmed the body of Eric Eucker body was discovered on Saturday, the same day that Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend.
