Denver is looking to become a host of a future Super Bowl after submitting a bid to the NFL to become a home for America's biggest sporting event.

The Broncos' Mile High Stadium would be the venue for a Super Bowl in 2018, 2019 or 2010 after Denver Mayor Michael Hancock confirmed the bid.

NFL fan Hancock told a meeting with the Denver Post that the city would join Indianapolis, New Orleans and Minneapolis, who have already announced their desire to host the 2018 game.

The NFL will decide on a 2018 host in May 2014, and until then Denver will join the lobbying process with the other candidate cities.

Future Super Bowl Hosts:

2013: New Orleans
2014: New Jersey
2015: Phoenix

"We will pursue it along with Visit Denver," Hancock said. "I think Denver would be head and shoulders above any other city to compete to host a Super Bowl."

Tourism bureau Visit Denver president Richard Scharf says that the success of New York's first outdoor cold-weather Super Bowl staging in February 2014 will go a long way in deciding the future bids.

"The New Jersey game is going to tell a good story on how that works in an outdoor venue," Scharf said. "We have daily highs that are above Indianapolis and New York.

"We are 10 degrees warmer than Indianapolis and 7 degrees warmer than New York in February. That is also our second-driest month of the year. It is not totally out of the question."

The Super Bowl has traditionally been held in a warm-weather city, with even the occasional cold weather venues such as Detroit or last year in Indianapolis having domed stadiums to play the game in.

MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will be the first cold weather Super Bowl being held outside, and if that succeeds then Denver would get a big boost and have at least one obstacle out of the way.

New Orleans will also host the upcoming Super Bowl in February, before the trip to New York and the return to Phoenix in 2015, while the slated new San Francisco 49ers stadium set to open in 2014 is set to be a contender straight away.
