Jason Babin has landed in Jacksonville after the Jaguars claimed him off the waiver wire following his release by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jacksonville will throw Babin straight into the action on Sunday in a bid to improve their league-worst pass rush when they take on the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills themselves put in a bid for Babin as did the Washington Redskins, but the 2-9 Jaguars had only the Kansas City Chiefs above them in the NFL waiver order so they were able to add him to their team and pick up the last $1.69m remaining on his 2012 salary.

Jags coach Mike Mularkey says Babin will fit right in and hopefully elevate a defence that has registered just 13 sacks this season - Babin himself has 5.5 from his 11 games with the Eagles this season.

"We've got five games and we're trying to win these games," Mularkey said. "It's a sign that we're trying to show our team that we're trying to win right now, that this is not 'play the young guys and do the evaluating.'

"We're trying to win, and we're doing whatever we can to improve our roster. This is a great move."

Several teams chasing play-off spots had wanted to sign Babin also, but the NFL system for equality means that struggling teams have first option on any players being released.

Babin ranks third in the NFL since 2010 with 36 sacks and has a career total of 53.5 from his 109 games which include spells with the Texans, Seahawks, Chiefs and Titans.

"We're trying to get some pressure on the quarterback. He'll fit what we're doing," Mularkey added. "We could use some help in that area."
