Colin Kaepernick justified his inclusion as the rookie quarterback guided San Francisco 49ers to a 31-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Kaepernick had impressed on his maiden start against the Chicago Bears after first-choice quarterback Alex Smith had been ruled out with concussion.

And although Smith was declared fit, Kaepernick kept his place - and he completed 16-of-25 passes for 231 yards.

Kaepernick also rushed for a score, while he connected with Frank Gore with a six-yard touchdown pass.

New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees completed 26-of-41 passes however he was intercepted twice and sacked five times.

And Ahmad Brooks (50 yards) and Donte Whitner (42 yards) each returned an interception for touchdowns for the 49ers to rub salt into the wounds.

"I felt like we played well enough to win in a lot of areas today," Brees said. "What's glaring is the two turnovers that resulted in touchdowns for them. That can't happen."

Brees did connect with Marques Colston, David Thomas and Jed Collins for touchdowns but it was not enough to for the Saints, who had won their three previous games.
