Denver Broncos running back Willis McGahee is out of the rest of the regular season after being placed on Injured Reserve.

McGahee suffered a torn medial cruciate ligament during their 30-23 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday when his knee was hit by the helmet of cornerback Quentin Jammer.

The Broncos hoped to avoid putting him on IR but coach John Fox said there are hopes he will be available by the time the play-offs come around, and he has been given a 'designated for return' tag just in case.

McGahee was enjoying a productive season, leading the Broncos with 731 rushing yards on 167 carries and scoring four touchdowns as he tried to take the pressure off veteran quarterback Peyton Manning.

In his absence, Ronnie Hillman and Lance Ball are expected to carry the load behind Manning although Knowshown Moreno, who has not been active on gameday since 17 September, will return as the No 3 back.
