NFL: Greg Zuerlein misses record field goal attempt as St Louis Rams fall short in Miami

Ryan Tannehill: threw for 185 yards with no turnovers, as well as two touchdowns

The Miami Dolphins had their defense to thank as they saw off the St Louis Rams 17-14 to join their beaten opponents on a 3-3 record for the season.

St Louis outgained their hosts by 170 total yards but proved unable to turn their dominance into points at Sun Life Stadium, managing just one touchdown.

They had gone 6-0 ahead thanks to a pair of Greg Zuerlein field goals, at that stage extending his record for the season to a perfect 15 attempts at the posts.

However, the rookie kicker would miss three more attempts in the rest of the contest, going wide left from 48 and 32 yards in the first half before failing with an NFL-record attempt from 66 yards in the closing seconds trying to force overtime.

The Dolphins were outrushed 162 to 19 yards, but quarterback Ryan Tannehill went 21 for 29 for 185 yards with no turnovers. He threw touchdown passes of 29 yards to Marlon Moore and also a one-yarder to Anthony Fasano.

Sam Bradford went 26 for 39 for 315 yards for the Rams while also finding the end zone himself on the ground. He followed up his brave one-yard run by throwing a two-point conversion to Steven Jackson that cut the gap to three points.

They had at one stage trailed by 13 after Tannehill's two TD passes had been complimented by a 42-yard field goal from Dan Carpenter in the second quarter.
