New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has returned to practice but his status for Sunday's Super Bowl is still in doubt.

The 22-year-old, who broke NFL records for a tight end with 1,327 receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns this season, has been struggling with an ankle injury he picked up in the AFC Championship victory over Baltimore.

He had not taken to the practice field at all in the run up to the Super Bowl showdown with the New York Giants in Indianapolis until he was involved in the second half of the Patriots' two-hour session on Thursday.

"He did some things. He didn't do everything. We'll see how he is tomorrow (Friday). I think that will be the big key - how he responds to this today," New England head coach Bill Belichick said.

It is still uncertain whether or not Gronkowski will be able to play, or if his role will be limited is he is able to suit up at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Belichick added: "We'll see where he is tomorrow - whether that set him back, whether it didn't and whether he's able to continue to progress on a daily basis.

"But it was a good test for him, too, at least. At least he was out here and did some things to see how it feels. We'll see how it goes."
