Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles could miss the rest of the NFL season after suffering a knee injury against the Detroit Lions.

Charles was carted off the field in the first quarter of his team's 48-3 defeat after being pushed out of bounds while lunging for the first down marker.

An official diagnosis has not yet been given but initial tests reportedly reveal that he has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, a season-ending injury.

The latest blow compounds an already miserable start to the season for the Chiefs, who have lost their first two matches by a combined score of 89-10.

The 24-year-old has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons, with his game-breaking ability out of the backfield a key part of the Chiefs' AFC West title-winning team in 2010.

But Kansas City now face a tough task if they are to repeat the same kind of success this year as Charles is set to become the third big-name player to be ruled out for the season.

Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry will miss the rest of the campaign after tearing knee ligaments while tight end Tony Moeaki also suffered season-ending knee damage during the pre-season.
