The Detroit Lions set a new franchise record for their largest margin of victory by crushing the poor Kansas City Chiefs 48-3 at Ford Field.

Matthew Stafford was again the star of the show for the Lions, the quarterback throwing for 294 yards and four touchdowns to help his team move to 2-0 at the start of the new NFL season.

Wide receiver Calvin Johnson hauled in two of Stafford's throws for scores, while their were also touchdowns through the air for tight end Tony Scheffler and running back Jahvid Best.

Best also reached the end zone on the ground, while fellow tail-back Keiland Williams rounded out the scoring with a one-yard run with five minutes to play.

Comfortable lead

Jason Hanson booted a pair of field goals in the final two minutes of the first half to give Detroit, who defeated Tampa Bay on the opening weekend, a comfortable 20-3 lead at the interval.

Johnson's second touchdown catch of the day - his first had earlier broken the deadlock - put the Lions well clear at the start of the third quarter, before Best's brace and another score from Williams completed the rout.

Kansas City's only points of the contest came on a 33-yard Ryan Succop field goal midway through the first quarter, making the score 7-3 at the time.

To make matters even worse for the Chiefs, who were thrashed last week by the Buffalo Bills, star tail-back Jamaal Charles was taken off the field on a cart after suffering a left knee injury in the first quarter.

Quarterback Matt Cassel managed just 133 yards passing, throwing three interceptions. In total the visitors had six turnovers, including two fumbles that led to Detroit touchdowns in the second half.
