The Oakland Raiders drafted Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr with the fourth pick of the NFL Draft’s second round.

First-round selections were completed on Thursday night in New York City and 24 hours later the second and third rounds were held.

Carr, who is the brother of the former No 1 overall pick David, was the standout pick of the second day, the Raiders adding the Californian to a new-look roster which includes veteran quarterback Matt Schaub.

"I learned everything that he did right and everything that he did wrong," Carr said of his brother, who did not live up to expectations after being picked right at the top of the 2002 draft.

"He told me that if he could do anything, he hopes he made the path smoother for me as I transition into the NFL."

The only other quarterback to go in the second or third rounds was Eastern Illinois signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo, who is set to be a back-up to Tom Brady after the New England Patriots selected him with the 62nd overall pick.

Approach

"Whether I was coming in as the starter or as the back-up, I'm going to go in and approach it the same way," Garoppolo said.

"I'm going to go out there and try to get better each and every day. That's what good football players do."

The Houston Texans had the first pick of the second round and decided to bolster their offensive line with UCLA guard Xavier Su'a-Filo.

A new draft record was set when a running back did not go off the board until the 54th selection, when Bishop Sankey of Washington was picked up by the Tennesse Titans.

The Dallas Cowboys took defensive end Demarcus Lawrence with the second pick of the second round as they try and replace star pass rusher DeMarcus Ware, who was recently released by the team.

"I'm my own Demarcus. I don't like to try to be nobody else. I'm going to be me, and I'm going to do it well," Lawrence said.

Defensive linemen Kony Ealy (60th overall) and Louis Nix (83rd) fell further than expected before being picked by the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans respectively.
