Colin Kaepernick's poor start to the season continued as the San Francisco 49ers suffered a 27-7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Kaepernick had his worst passing performance as a starter in the defeat to the Seattle Seahawks a week ago, managing 127 yards and being intercepted three times.

And things failed to get much better as the 25-year-old suffered his first home loss at Candlestick Park as a starter.

Kaepernick completed just 13-of-27 passes for 150 yards, with one interception, as the 49ers slipped to 1-2 for the season.

"We have to be better," Kaepernick said. "I have to be better. I have to be able to make throws down the field."

While Kaepernick struggled, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was left delighted as he got one over his former coach Jim Harbaugh.

Luck played under Harbaugh at Stanford University during his US college football career - before the duo heading off down different paths in the NFL.

Luck, last year's top pick in the draft, threw for 164 yards and ran for a six-yard touchdown en route to the win.

Trent Richardson, who was the No 3 pick behind Luck in 2012, marked his Colts debut with a touchdown from a one-yard run in the first quarter.

Ahmad Bradshaw also crossed for a one-yard touchdown run, while Adam Vinatieri landed a pair of field goals for the Colts.

Kendall Hunter's 13-yard TD run in the first quarter was as good as it got for the 49ers.
