Utility man pens three-year extension

Versatile Gonzalo Jara has signed a new three-year contract with Premier League newcomers West Brom. The Chile international, who featured in all four of his country's games at the World Cup, is now due to stay at the Hawthorns until the summer of 2013. The new deal also contains an additional 12-month option in the club's favour should they be keen to further retain the utility man's services. Jara has been a big success since arriving from Colo Colo in a bargain £1.4million transfer a year ago. He follows in the footsteps of Graham Dorrans, Chris Brunt and Youssouf Mulumbu in signing new deals this summer.

Total professional

Albion coach Roberto Di Matteo said: "Gonzo fully deserves this new contract. He has proved an excellent acquisition and played a big part in our promotion success last season before his unfortunate injury. "He is a total professional, has a terrific attitude and his versatility is a real asset to the squad. "Gonzo has all the attributes needed to play in the Premier League and I believe he has a big role to play this season within the framework of the team." Jara performed at right-back, left-back, centre-half and across the midfield last season before suffering a broken metatarsal in February's FA Cup tie at Reading. He battled back to fitness in time for the World Cup and played a major role in Chile reaching the second round before they were knocked out by Brazil.
