Didier Drogba has spoken of his disappointment at not making the Ivory Coast starting XI against Japan.

The former Chelsea striker was only on the bench for the Elephants' opening game in Group C on Saturday night before being brought on for Gonzaroua Die after 60 minutes.

"I was disappointed [not to start]," 36-year-old Drogba told French newspaper L'Equipe.

"But I have to show my respect to those that started.

"When I went in, I just wanted to help the team to win the match and I did not need this disappointment in order to be motivated.”

Despite Drogba not scoring or even setting up Ivory Coast’s two goals, manager Sabri Lamouchi believed his presence acted as a game-changing catalyst.

The Galatasaray forward was only too pleased to assist his countrymen on the pitch when his time came.

"Japan weren't very dangerous but we trailed and had to come from behind to win," he said.

"I don't know how long I played but I knew it was important to give something extra to the team.

"It is a beautiful victory and we are happy with the result.”

Ivory Coast next face Colombia on Thursday in Brasília.
