Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao has been ruled out for the rest of the World Cup with the groin injury he suffered in the 4-0 defeat to Germany.
The Real Madrid defender was stretchered off after 65 minutes of Monday's humiliating defeat and a scan on Tuesday has confirmed he suffered a grade two tear of the adductor muscle.
Coentrao said after the game: "I'm afraid that my World Cup has come to an end.
"I think it’s a serious injury, though I hope it's not. These things happen in our profession and, unfortunately, today it fell to me. It’s a very sad day, one of the saddest of my life.
"But this is just a game and despite the heavy defeat, we can still go through to the next round."
Hugo Almeida and Rui Patricio also suffered thigh injuries against Germany, but scans showed both sustained only grade one injuries and will continue to receive treatment in the hope of featuring again later in the tournament.
