Tim Cahill is proud to have netted a wonder goal against the Netherlands and of his domestic and international career.

The former Millwall and Everton forward, who now plies his trade in the MLS with the New York Red Bulls, cracked home a spectacular volley as Australia suffered a 3-2 World Cup defeat to Holland on Wednesday.

He has sought to play the strike down, saying he has produced similar at home, but is pleased to have seen his efforts recognised around the globe.

Cahill said: “I score goals like that every day in the garden, but to do it on the biggest stage in the world makes me very proud.

“The goal is right up there with my very best I suppose just because of the way it went in.

“You think of (Marco) Van Basten and (Robin) Van Persie and players like that. But people only ever expect me to score headers regardless of some of the goals I have scored in my career, so it was a great moment.

“There’s also the thought that Brazil is the home of football and I am sure that goal resonated around the world so it is a goal that me, my family and friends can share forever.”

More from World Cup Group B

At the age of 34, and with a ban set to be served in Australia’s final group game in Brazil, Cahill is ready to bid farewell to football’s biggest stage, but says he can look back fondly on all that he has achieved.

He added: “I suppose I have always fought against adversity in football. I was never the best player.

“But when you have heart that you learned from Millwall and later at Everton, and you learn how to play English-style football, then nothing can stop you when you produce moments like that.

“That will be my last match in a World Cup but I have some great memories. I played out there against some of my heroes in Van Persie and (Arjen) Robben.

“Coming from Millwall, that’s where the dream all started for me.

“I will never forget where I came from and Millwall and Everton played a massive part of that for me in English football.”
