Southampton teenager James Ward-Prowse has conceded that making England's squad for the World Cup is 'always in the back of my mind'.

Ward-Prowse has featured in all-but one of Southampton's Premier League games this season and only England cap Jay Rodriguez has made more appearances in all competitions.

The 19-year-old has also featured six times for England's Under 21s since making his debut last September and is already being tipped for a surprise senior call-up.

The midfielder is focusing on improving his game at Southampton, but does hold the ambition of playing for England at a World Cup finals.

"Every young English footballer wants to play at a World Cup for England, it's always in the back of my mind," Ward-Prowse told The Guardian.

"If I train hard and improve as a player and produce in games, then that will come. But at my stage of development where I am at the moment is right for me.

"If a World Cup place comes calling, then so be it."

Ward-Prowse has also praised Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino, who has kept the team in the top half of the table all season.

He added: "He's instilled a lot of aggression into everyone. The way we play without the ball, going to press and get the ball back.

"He's given us a belief that no matter who the team is in front of us, we can go out and beat them."
