Quintet axed from provisional squad for South Africa

Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa has cut five players from his provisional World Cup squad following their defeat to Mexico. Bielsa had originally named a 30-man squad but it was reduced to 25 after his men were beaten 1-0 in a Mexico City warm-up match on Sunday. All five of the axed players are midfielders, with Manuel Iturra (Universidad de Chile), Pedro Morales (Dinamo Zagreb), Jaime Valdes (Atalanta) and Colo Colo pair Charles Aranguiz and Jose Pedro Fuenzalida all dropped from the line-up. Iturra's omission comes after he was red-carded for a foul on Andres Guardado just two minutes after coming off the bench in Sunday's defeat. Argentinian Bielsa will drop two more players from his squad in time for the announcement of the final lists on 1st June. Chile play their opening match of the World Cup finals in South Africa against Honduras on 16th June, and will also face Spain and Switzerland in Group H.
