Strachan hopes to land winger

Middlesbrough are hoping to persuade Shunsuke Nakamura to join them on deadline day. Boro made a move for the Japanese star last week and Gordon Strachan wants to be reunited with the former Celtic winger. Boro have offered Espanyol £250,000 for a six-month loan and the Spanish side have accepted the bid. The Teesside club are also understood to be willing to take on Nakamura's contract for the length of his stay in England. Espanyol are now looking to push Nakamura into making the move, as his switch to Spain has not been the big success they had hoped for. But the sticking point seems to be that Nakamura is not convinced a move to Middlesbrough is the right transfer for him. His agent has flown to Barcelona on Monday to hold talks with Espanyol about a possible deadline day deal. "He can go, but I don't think anything is clear," Espanyol sporting director Roman Planes told La Vanguardia. "But it depends on the players and what he wants to do." Should Boro land Nakamura, then he is likely to be seen as an ideal replacement for Adam Johnson, who is hoping to finalise a move to Manchester City before the transfer window closes.
