Heinze plays down Messi factor

Gabriel Heinze claims Argentina's World Cup opponents should fear the whole side - not just Lionel Messi.

Defender insists Argentina are not a one-man team

Gabriel Heinze insists Argentina's World Cup opponents should fear the side as a whole and not just Lionel Messi. Star striker Messi, the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, is tipped to shine in South Africa this summer after enjoying an outstanding season with Barcelona. But veteran defender Heinze is adamant Diego Maradona's side are by no means a one-man team. "Everybody expects something whenever Lionel touches the ball, that's normal, he's the best in the world and is in his best moment, but Argentina do not depend on him but on the group," said Heinze. "It's incredible what he does but he is one more player and he can make mistakes. "I believe it's the team that makes you win these very difficult tournaments." Argentina take on Nigeria in their World Cup opener on Saturday and Marseilles man Heinze, who has played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, is expecting a tough encounter.

Powerful

"Many of us know some of the Nigerian players after playing against them in France and England," he added. "The Nigerian players are very athletic and are powerful physically. They are talented people who are keen to make an impact in the World Cup. "They are going to put you under pressure and have a direct and fast style of play. We are going to have to be ready." But Heinze insists Argentina are fully focused on their own performance rather than worrying about their opponents, adding: "We are putting the emphasis on our play and plans, which are the most important things. We are feeling very good."
