Osasuna midfielder suffers serious injury

Switzerland midfielder Xabier Margairaz is to miss Euro 2008 after suffering a serious knee injury. The 24-year-old tore ligaments and cartilage in a friendly match for his club side Osasuna on Wednesday. Osasuna have now confirmed that he will miss the rest of this season and the European championship in the summer, while reports in the Spanish media suggest he could be out of action for 12 months. "It is a very serious injury that requires an operation, after which the time which he will be sidelined for will be known," read a statement on Osasuna's official website. News of Margairaz's injury will come as a major blow to Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland, as he was very much an emerging star in the country. He has ten international caps and enjoyed success in his homeland with FC Zurich before moving to Osasuna last summer.
